Children's Eye Health and Safety Month At Our Christenson Vision Care in Hudson, WI
During this month, all of us at Christenson Vision Care are partnering with Prevent Blindness to celebrate National Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. Back to school time is here for most families and one of the best ways to make sure your child does well in school is to make her vision a priority. It's important for every child to have a comprehensive eye exam before beginning school for the first time. Not only will we be able to determine your child's visual acuity, we'll look for other common vision problems in childhood.
Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes, is a common condition in which the eyes don't properly line up with each other. About four percent of all children are born with this condition, which can be corrected with either eyeglasses or surgery.
Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is one eye having decreased vision because of abnormal visual development at a very young age. It happens when nerve pathways between the eye and the brain aren't stimulated properly. This makes the brain favor one eye, leaving the other one to develop poorly. We can treat the lazy eye with glasses, eye patches, eye drops, or sometimes surgery.
Optometrist Talks Sports Safety
Back to school can mean back to playing sports for many kids, but this can pose a real danger to your child's eyesight if it's not protected. Sports injuries are a leading cause of blindness in children, and almost all of them can be prevented with the right eye protection. We carry a wide variety of protective eye wear for athletes of all ages, playing all sports. Check with your school or sports league to make sure eye protection is required during all practice and game play. If it's not required, you have a right to insist on your child's eyes being protected, and our optometrist can help by advising the right type of protection.
